    The Great U.S. Excursion
Given my lack of success last time, I'm not sure how the blogging thing is going to go on this trip. If you don't know what's happening, my parents and I are traveling through the States in the car for about 6 weeks. The basic plan is to hit Chicago first, then head through Colorado and Utah and on into California, then back east through Nevada and Texas, possibly Louisiana and Tennessee and assorted other places.

Anyway, I should at least be able to manage to update where we are each day, so here goes:

    September 4th - Sturgis, Michigan
    650 km

    September 5th - 7th - Chicago, Illinois

    -Bus tour of Chicago
    -Chicago Art Institute
    -Magnificent Mile
-Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Tour
    -Clandestine Industries Merchandise!

    September 8th - Omaha, Nebraska

    - Spend the day driving through Iowa, and landed on the outskirts of Omaha. Cornfield, Cornfield, Walmart, Cornfield...

    September 9th & 10th - Denver, Colorado

    September 11 - Vail, Colorado

    - Rocky Mountain National Park

    September 12 - Blanding, Utah

    - Arches National Park

    September 13 - Monticello, Utah

    - Mesa Verde National Park

I'm getting caught up, slooooowly but surely
    Hi Everybody,

Sorry I sort of fell off the edge of the earth for a while there - it's been a busy little while, but I haven't forgotten about the journal, I promise. It's definitely going to take me a while to catch up, but I managed to get a few new entries posted, and I've got a bunch of pictures that are almost ready to put up as well. Just the thought of having to write the second entry for Cambodia is enough to make me cry - 14 temples in two days, keeping them all straight is terrifying even with pictures - but hopefully I can get that done before I've forgotten everything.

I'm back in Thailand, in Phuket at the moment. It's the off season now, so it's very quiet, and I'm not particularly excited about where I'm staying, but I'm planning to move on tomorrow. Had a great time travelling for six weeks through New Zealand, Australia and Bali. New Zealand was probably my favourite spot - learning to surf was excellent, even if I am really really terrible, my parents were very patient as I dragged them all over the country in pursuit of various Lord of the Rings locations, and even came to watch me jump off a bridge! We stayed with the host family that I stayed with when I was in Melbourne on exchange a million years ago, so that was a real highlight. I also went scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and didn't get eaten by a crocodile in Darwin, so the trip has been pretty fantastic, but more on that soon...

    Cambodia - Phnom Penh
Right, so I'm still working on catching up on the rest of Laos and Vietnam, but I thought it might be a good idea to start doing the current stuff as well. I'm in Siem Reap, Cambodia at the moment, heading off to see Angkor Wat in the morning, so here are the details of my last couple days in Phnom Penh. When I do post my "catch-up" entries, everything will be chronological, but I've decided out of order is better than nothing at the moment. :)

    Nutshell Update - Vietnam
    Hi Everyone,

Sorry I've gotten so far behind on the journal entries...I was doing so well for a while there, but my discipline has gone out the window lately. :)

Just a quick sketch of what I've been up to, to be filled in with more detail in the next few days (I hope). Spent about four days in Vientiane, which was lovely but perhaps a little too much time. Rather than suffering through more horrible overland bus trips on Laos' dodgy back roads, I flew into Hanoi, which is probably one of the craziest cities I've ever been to - crossing the street is like an adventure sport, and the noise takes a bit of getting used to. Spent four days there, doing a lot of wandering the old quarter and a bit of sightseeing, then took the bus down to Hue. Only spent two days there, and did a day tour to the DMZ, which was....long, but interesting. After that, it was further South to Hoi An, which is one of my favourite places I've visited so far. I'm acutally just about to leave, and although that's a little bit sad, it's also definitely a good thing - I've been here for five days, and done nothing but shop pretty much the whole time! Hoi An is the place to go for getting clothes custom tailored, and everything is very inexpensive...you could say that I went a little insane, but at least I have a fabulous new wardrobe to show for it! I also bumped into one of the girls that I travelled with in Laos on the bus on the way here, so I've had some company, which has been very nice. I'm now removing myself from temptation, and heading out on a fun-filled 24 hours bus ride (yes, you read that correctly) to Saigon, which is apparently twice as crazy as Hanoi. So assuming I don't have to cross any streets to get from my guesthouse to an internet cafe, look for another update in the next few days!

Also, check out the entry one below this one, if you haven't already - I posted it ages ago, but for some reason it wasn't visible...

ETA - sorry everyone, I posted this entry ages ago, but for some reason the link wasn't working properly. It's all fixed now.

Still working on getting caught up and getting some photos uploaded, but I'm making some progress finally...Tune in next time for the nightmare busride!

    Nutshell Update - Laos
    Hi Everyone!

Sorry I've been offline for so long...this is the first place I've had access to the internet (or cell phone service, or electricity for more than two hours in the evening) in quite a while. For such a big-city girl, it's been quite a shock!

I don't have time for a proper update at the moment, but here's a quick nutshell of my route so far. To get to Laos, I spent one night on the Thai border, and then two days on a slow boat down the Mekong, with a stop over in a tiny village called Pak Beng. Eventually arrived in Luang Prabang, which is a lovely old Colonial town, with a big group of friends I met on the boat, and spent two days there seeing the sights. Then it was North-East to Mueng Noi for two days, a tiny little village only accessible by water from Nong Khiaw. I had a cold, so I didn't get to do much there, but it was very beautiful, and we met some lovely locals. After that it was back to Nong Khiaw for a complete nightmare of a bus journey that eventually brought us to Sam Neua (close to the Vietnam border), which is where I am now. I'm off to see some caves shortly, then tomorrow I will be heading South to Phonsavan to see the Plain of Jars, and then back West to Vang Vieng (a backpacker party town), and Vientiane. Internet access should be much easier to come by after tomorrow, I think, as I'm getting back into proper cities from the various villages I've been staying in. Vientiane, at least, is a big city, so hopefully by then I should be able to start properly updating again!

    Big Photo Update
Got my photos all up to date (finally!), so I hope you enjoy them. I'm leaving for Laos tomorrow. I'm heading to Luang Prabang by bus and Slow Boat, which is a two day trip down the Mekong River, so I may be offline for a couple of days again.

Next Entry Will Be A Bit Delayed
I'm leaving Chiang Mai tomorrow on a three day 4x4 trek, so I'll be offline for a couple of days. Luckily, I will have much to report when I return, including Elephant Riding and White Water Rafting!

    Sailing to Ko Chang
Sorry I've taken so long to properly update my journal, internet time has been a little hard to come by lately. I'm almost up to date, and now that I'm settled in Chiang Mai for a few days, I should be able to get back on track.

That said, when I came to post this entry, I forgot my guidebook with my map of Ko Chang in it, so I have no idea what the beaches we were on were called. Whoops. I'll edit the entry once I have my book again.

    First Photo Posting!
Finally got my first week worth of pictures organized. These are all from Bangkok, mostly at the Grand Palace, and a few from the weekend market. Hopefully I'll be able to upload more pics tomorrow.
